Our methodology

OfferGauge uses independent vehicle valuation data to produce its comparisons. This page explains how we look up vehicles, which figures we use, and the limitations you should be aware of.

Vehicle data

Vehicle details and valuations are obtained from a third-party vehicle data provider using your registration number, mileage, and stated pre-incident condition. We do not create or adjust valuation figures ourselves.

All valuation figures displayed in your report are sourced directly from the data provider's response. If a figure is not available for your vehicle, we display "Not available" rather than estimating or substituting a value.

Valuation categories

Vehicle data providers typically return several valuation categories. Common categories include retail, private sale, trade, and auction values. The exact categories available vary by vehicle and provider.

Each category is explained within your report. OfferGauge does not determine which category an insurer is required to use — insurers set their own methodology for settling write-off claims.

The comparison

The free preliminary comparison on your result page shows how your insurer's offer relates to one or more available valuation figures. The full report shows the complete picture including all available categories, GBP differences, and percentage differences.

The comparison is produced automatically from the data returned and the figure you entered. It is factual information, not a legal opinion.

What this does not tell you

• Whether your insurer is in breach of contract or any legal obligation
• What settlement amount you are legally entitled to receive
• Whether your insurer will change their offer
• Whether any specific valuation category is the correct one for your claim
